Balvenie 14Y Caribbean Cask

฿830

Balvenie 14Y Caribbean Cask

Fourteen years in ex-bourbon American oak, then a final stretch in casks that previously held Caribbean rum — a finishing regime that softens the grain edge and lays a warm, spiced sweetness over the whisky. It comes from Balvenie in Speyside, one of the few Scottish distilleries that still grows its own barley and floors its own malt.

Speyside single malt, 14 years old.
Finished in former Caribbean rum casks.
Matured first in ex-bourbon American oak.
Grown, malted and distilled at the distillery.

How it is made

Single malt means one distillery, one grain: 100% malted barley, no other cereal in the mash. The spirit is distilled in copper pot stills, which is why Scotch malt carries weight and texture that column-distilled grain spirit does not. The rum-cask finish is a secondary maturation — the whisky spends most of its life in American oak, then a shorter period in wood that held rum, picking up the residual sugars and spice left in the staves.

How it tastes

Creamy and rounded on the palate, with vanilla and toffee from the bourbon oak, then a layer of tropical fruit and soft brown sugar from the rum casks. The finish is gentle and sweet-spiced rather than dry.

Good to know

Age statements on Scotch are a legal minimum, not an average: the 14 on the label is the youngest whisky in the bottle, and older casks may be blended in. Rum-cask finishing is a relatively recent fashion in Speyside — the wood is porous and has held a spirit made from molasses, so it carries sweetness that fresh oak never would.
